My Journey to the Profession

Twenty years, nine roles, five countries — and how the specialisation happened.

2000 — 2005
Adamson University, Manila
BSc Mechanical Engineering. Registered with the Philippine Professional Regulation Commission in October 2005.
2006
Fluor — New Graduate Program
Entry was restricted to licensed engineers finishing in the top 10% of their class. The programme rotated graduates through disciplines to find where they fit. Rotating equipment is where I landed, and I never left.
2007 — 2011
Learning the trade — USA and Australia
Refinery expansion in Louisiana, power generation in Texas, then the Gladstone LNG upstream development in Queensland. Datasheets, requisitions, bid evaluations, vendor drawings. The unglamorous groundwork that makes everything afterwards possible.
2011
The Middle East — Samsung Engineering, Saudi Arabia
CO₂ capture and injection for Saudi Aramco. Sealless VFD-driven centrifugal compressors, gas dehydration, instrument air. First time carrying a package on my own, and first time on a site survey verifying whether a FEED actually held up.
2013 — 2015
Offshore — McDermott Arabia
The Manifa platform. Chemical injection packages, API 674 re-injection pumps, offshore fire fighting systems. Witnessed Factory Acceptance Testing, signed acceptances, and spent time in the fabrication yard through pre-commissioning. Engineering stops being theoretical when you sign for the equipment.
2015 — 2019
Consultancy and FEED — Atkins, then Fluor
Master Gas System Expansion for Saudi Aramco, then Shell's Penguins redevelopment in the UK North Sea. Accredited ASEAN Engineer in 2018.
2019 — 2023
Front-end and refinery work — TechnipFMC, JGC
FEED for the Borouge 4 steam cracker in Abu Dhabi, then refinery upgrading in Basrah and petrochemicals in Thailand. Working the front end teaches you which decisions are expensive to reverse later.
2023 — 2026
Leading a discipline — Fluor
Lead Mechanical Engineer across copper-gold mining in Pakistan, rare earths in Australia, and gas compression modernisation with hydrogen blending in California. The shift from owning packages to owning a discipline's schedule, resources and deliverable quality.
2026 — present
Project management — Medgulf Construction, Qatar
Senior Mechanical Engineer with general project management responsibility on high-value construction projects. Twenty years on from the graduate programme, still the same discipline — now with the commercial and schedule accountability around it.

A caution worth stating plainly: these tools are engineering aids, not a substitute for discipline judgement or a stamped calculation. Verify every input against your project datasheets and P&IDs, and confirm the reference points match your case before using any output in a design decision.

Twenty years of comprehensive EPC and FEED experience. My career covers the entire project lifecycle — Front-End Engineering Design and FEED verification, detailed engineering, procurement support, package management, construction, and pre-commissioning and commissioning site support. Onshore and offshore.

I specialise as a Senior Rotary / Mechanical Package Engineer, holding sole discipline responsibility for multi-million dollar rotating equipment packages delivered for global majors including Saudi Aramco and Santos Ltd, alongside Shell, Marathon Petroleum, Dow Chemical and ADNOC's Borouge.

My work centres on the package procurement cycle: generating technical specifications and mechanical datasheets, raising Material Requisitions, leading Technical Bid Evaluations, and executing thorough Vendor Document Reviews. On site I have supported pre-commissioning and commissioning, witnessed Factory Acceptance Testing, and participated in Joint Engineering Inspection & Testing prior to client turnover.

I work to API 610, 613, 614, 616, 617, 619, 670, 671 and 682, alongside ASME, TEMA and the relevant NFPA codes — and I manage the multi-discipline interfaces where mechanical packages meet process, electrical, instrumentation and civil scope. I currently work in Qatar as a Senior Mechanical Engineer with project management responsibility on high-value construction projects.

Outcome Supplier documentation was reviewed against the purchase order throughout, and performance and mechanical run tests were witnessed personally alongside a third-party inspector at Factory Acceptance Test. Items were delivered to schedule and budget, punch list items were minimised, and no major rework or modification was required from the supplier.

Engineering judgement The client placed a hold on all HPPT compressor control system documents, arguing that a specification required PLC control and that the proprietary control system was not on the approved vendor list. Changing it at that stage would have hit both cost and schedule, and the control documents interfaced heavily with the plant DCS. On review, the specification cited was neither attached to the purchase order nor cross-referenced in any technical specification or design basis document — and the compressor was a special type, sealless with active magnetic bearings and VFD-driven, whose proprietary control system had been developed specifically to suit it. Outcome: the recommendation was approved and the original cost retained.
